He had been introduced to the field of social development by Rev. Fr. D.Amudhan, a writer cum social activist and started his career as an Animator in a parish church of Tanjore Diocese in 1983 and worked as a Zonal Coordinator from 1986 – 1991 in the projects in Thanjavur Multipurpose Social Service Society (TMSSS) for the development of Women & Children, Youth, Fishermen, Repatriates and Refuges from Srilanka and developed under leadership of Rev. Fr. A.Micheal. In 1992 joined in McLevy Institute of Development Service (MIDS) Chennai, as a Project Coordinator. Then in1993 joined in Madras Christian Council of Social Service (MCCSS), an ecumenical organization in Chennai. In MCCSS I held various positions like Zonal In-Charge, Area Development Officer, Program Officer and Project Coordinator working for ‘Urban Slum Dwellers Coordination for Housing Rights’, HIV and AIDS Intervention among Slum Community, Female Sex Workers and Women SHGs. He now, leads SAVE Trustpromoting various initiatives for enhancement of the marginalized of urban and rural communities in and around Chennai.
SAVE Trust initiated a new network of NGOs in January 2012, consisting of 30 NGOs from Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram Districts. The forum was named as“Pudhiya Vidiyal” (New Dawn) and Mr. S.Baskar, Director SAVE Trust was elected as the Convener of the forum. As an opportunity to organize the south India partner NGOs of Tzedek, SAVE Trust initiated the meeting in March, 2014, in the presence of Mr. Hirsh Cashdan, Chairperson, Tzedek; Tzedek South India Partners Network (TSIPN) was promoted and Mr. S.Baskar was elected as the Secretary.
In charge for “Urimai Vazhvu” (Life with Right) a monthly magazine run by TMSSS which was a connecting medium to share the initiatives, experience of struggles addressed by the rural mass and valuable creations of women and youth like poetry, songs, success stories and articles on social themes.
Facilitated Vicariate and Taluk level women & youth federations to acquire livelihood opportunities and basic needs of the rural people in Tanjore District.
Successfully managed and coordinated more than1000 women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and 28 Women and Men Federations, an apex forum the Peoples Welfare Association (Makkal Nala Mempattu Sangam) in MCCSS.
Campaigned successfully against forced eviction of urban slum hutment dwellers and facilitated seminars, conferences and mass campaigns for ensuring their housing rights in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
Visited Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU), Taiwan on a staff exchange program from the 26th of May to 13th of June 2009 to take part in the seminar on Women Empowerment, HIV and AIDS Intervention and presented papers on Grameen (Village) Banking System, Savings, Thrift and Entrepreneurial Capacity of slum and rural women in India.
Writer: Capable of writing Articles, creating IEC Materials (Pamphlets), Poetry and formation of Slogans with awareness message on Social Themes in the fields of Empowerment, Health and AIDS Intervention, Education, Environment, Youth and Child Development.
Trainer: Providing orientations and capacity building trainings for grass-root level women, children, youth, adolescents, CBO leaders, NGO staff and social work students of schools & colleges from domestic and foreign institutions. The contents were socio- economic, political and cultural conditions of unorganized sectors in urban slums & rural areas, formation and management of federations and peoples associations, micro credit and thrift peoples banking system, soft skills, street theatre, HIV and AIDS, TB, child rights, education, education & career counseling.
Musician: Key board and Rhythm instruments like Thabla and Parai (an important percussion instrument of South India) and skilled in singing, writing social awareness songs, skits and folk theatre on social theme.
